Did you know the earth is hollow? Or at least some believe it to be so. What do you think? Is our planet’s core hollow? Or maybe it’s just that the earth is flat. Ok maybe those are far fetched, but let’s be honest, we all know Stonehenge was not erected without some extraterrestrial help. Not sure about that factoid either? Here is one final piece of information we can all agree on, Finland does not exits. The Nordic or Scandinavian country is a fake. It is simply a front for other countries to avoid environmental complaints.1
These are just three illustrations of a growing category of conspiracy theories. While I do not hold to any of the aforementioned “theories”, I bring them up because of the increasing number of people I know, interact with or have heard about holding to these or other views. 2020 was a strange year for everyone. It was a year when seismic change hit everyone. Quarantine, economic shutdown, loss of loved ones, and so much more has taken its toll on us all. One way it seems to be affecting a number of people is in accepting unrealistic and unfounded stories as fact.
“There is an avalanche of information and a painful absence of wisdom.”James Emery White
We are living in unprecedented times historically. There is more information at our fingertips than any previous time in history. If we want to research something all we have to do is pull up a web browser or call out, “Hey, Siri” or “Alexa”. In a moments time we have more to read, listen to, or watch than we have hours in a week. The question has shifted from where can I find the information, to how do I discern the information. Isn’t that what we all need more of right now? Discernment. So how do we determine what is true when reading the internet? James Emery White gives 3 helpful principles in “How to Read the Internet“.
Have you had any conspiracy theories compel you lately? How did you come to recognize they were just that, conspiracies and theories? Maybe one of the principles White mentions was helpful. I know I have come to really appreciate principle #3. As always I would love to interact and hear your thoughts so leave a comment below and be with the Lord’s people on the Lord’s Day.
