Preacher on the Run…

They say hindsight is 20/20. It’s the idea that after some event, circumstance or situation has taken place you can look back and see it for all it was. With time and distance comes objectivity. This can often be the case when you consider difficult things in life, especially suffering. Looking back gives you a perspective to move forward. This is how the phrase “Good Friday” can be understood.

I doubt the disciples saw Friday as good. That would have been the last word they would have used to describe what they were experiencing. Their master, teacher, and leader had just been brutally executed. The sky was dark. The Sabbath was upon them. Good was the farthest descriptor from their mouth. Yet almost 2,000 years later and we refer to that day as “good”, why? Hindsight!

We have the benefit of the larger story. As 21st century followers of Jesus, we can look back on what the 1st-century disciples could just look at. But we don’t need 2000+ years to gain the “good” perspective. The disciples only needed 3 days. What allows us to look back and see Friday as “good” is that Sunday came. But Friday is good because of what it reveals to us about Jesus, primarily that He is the Lamb of God.

On this otherwise routine Friday, I hope you have the hindsight of Sunday. I pray you recognize the larger story we are all a part of.
