Target, the Dodgers, and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. These 3 institutions have been in the news ad nausea over the past few weeks. In case you missed any of the highlights, you can do a quick Google search and see what the hullabaloo is all about. Without spoiling it for you, the headlines are all about what we are supposed to be celebrating this month. June is “pride month”.
The issue of pride month is highly divisive. Should the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender activity be celebrated and promoted? Why would one not want to achieve justice and equal opportunity for every group, regardless of sexual orientation? These are the questions at the heart of many debates during this month and currently in the West. But could there be a deeper discussion that needs to be had? Is it possible that underpinning this entire month and debate is the issue of human flourishing and the good life?
Christians talk about this stuff because the good life really is possible.
Samuel D. James
While Target and the Dodgers figure out how to participate in “Pride Month” and also not lose income and cultural prowess, individuals have to wrestle with their beliefs and the realities of what the good life is. We as human beings must have a view of flourishing that actually results in flourishing. Unfortunately, I believe the Christian view of human flourishing and human sexuality hasn’t been properly expressed or displayed. This is where I appreciate how Samuel D. James seeks to show, “How I Would Explain a Christian View of Transgenderism to a Non-Christian“. I think he does a fantastic job of sharing a winsome yet honest explanation.
What do you think? Has Samuel given a fair representation of the Christian view of transgenderism? If not, why not? If so, what specifically do you think he explained well? Whether you agree or not with Samuel D. James or Target and the Dodgers for that matter, I hope we can all agree that knowing what human flourishing is and what the good life should be is something worth figuring out and defending. As always be with the Lord’s people on the Lord’s day.
Until Next Time…
