Have you ever had one of those lightbulb moments? You know the kind where you’ve been dwelling on something for a while and then suddenly it just clicks. Maybe it was during a project on which you hit a roadblock. Quite possibly, it was in a relationship where tension seemed unresolved. If you do any kind of creative work (writing or otherwise), you’ve experienced a breakthrough moment. Every week that I teach or preach it, I need one of these moments.
Those profound times when frustration and discouragement give way to excitement and joy are a gift. These gifts come in all shapes a sizes. Sometimes it is through the voice of others, at other times they appear while sitting in silence. Regardless of how and when they come, once they do, you never see this situation the same. No longer is there wrestling and struggling, but instead movement and progress. I believe Christianity is in need of such a profound moment.
What is the Christian’s task in the world today?…not evangelism.
Francis Schaeffer
I also think the profound gift we need for today as followers of Jesus may have already been hinted at almost 50 years ago. In his article, “Something Profound in Our Generation“, Ray Ortlund shares such a gift. It comes from a well-known 20th-century voice – Francis Schaeffer. The 4 truths Schaeffer shares are a much-needed filter current Christianity could learn to apply.
Profundity comes in all shapes and sizes. It can come from a small child to an aged adult. We can learn from beautiful artists of our day as well as dead writers of the past. Where do you tend to find breakthroughs when you’re stuck? Which of the 4 truths Schaeffer shared do you think we are missing most in today’s world? Why? I’d love to hear from you, leave a comment below. And as always be with the Lord’s people on the Lord’s day.
Until Next Time…
