I’m tired! Probably not the introduction you were expecting for a New Year’s post. But it’s true. I’m tired. I thought about sitting down and writing out a “Happy New Year” post. Something calling us all to reflect on 2023. Something to help us reflect on the last year and learn from it. Something to push us forward into a new year full of potential and opportunity. But the reality is, I haven’t done that yet myself.
By the end of this first week of January each year, I have reflected on the previous year. Typically, I’ve already thought through, adjusted, written down, and expressed my goals for the coming year. Like a red-hot coal in the middle of a fire, my passion and drive are sky-high this first week of a new year. But not this year, not this week, not today. Instead, I’m just tired. And I was going to just push through, ignore it, and chalk it up to an overly busy holiday season…that was until I read this:
When I’m tired on the inside it is easier to stop caring about things on the outside.
Josh Ott
When I read that line, it struck a deep chord. It resonated with what I felt. And it was hard, but good to hear someone else say it. This is why I decided to share Josh Ott’s article “When the Leaders are Tired” instead of just another encouragement and tips for goal setting in a new year. The reality is you are likely tired as well so I hope you find Josh’s words revealing, helpful, and healing.
Which of the 5 steps Josh offers, do you find most helpful? Why? What do you think is at the root of your exhaustion? Is it living outside of your boundaries, beyond your limitations? Does it stem from a savior complex? Or is it something else for you? I’d love to hear what you thought of the article and how you are ensuring you get rest as a leader. As always be with the Lord’s people on the Lord’s day.
Until Next Time…
