As we all observe the destructive results of Helene this week, let’s not forget a principle that reminds us of the power of water. We harness water at dams to provide power to homes and businesses. We direct the flow of water to move objects along. While the power of water is often on display when large amounts of it move over a small amount of time, let’s not forget the power of water in a different way – a slow continuous drip over a long period of time. The power of water is routinely in its consistency.
I remember the first time I saw the picture above. I could not for the life of me figure out how a single drop of water repeated over 50 years could make any dent in a rock. But the reality is…it can and does. The same is true in discipleship. Consistency is an oft-forgotten superpower of discipleship. A slow continual dripping of water can carve out a large cavern – given enough time. The same is true of being formed into the image of God if we give God’s Word and His Spirit enough time. The consistent time in God’s word with others is a powerful shaping influence on people.
Consistency wins over excitement time and time again.

It’s been said that we overestimate what we can do in 1 year and underestimate what we can do in 10. The power of water is a reminder of the power of consistency. As they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and neither does someone get formed into the image of Christ overnight. Michael Kelley shares 3 insights on The Power of Consistency when it comes to discipleship.
The article is a challenge and encouragement. It’s challenges us to keep going. It also encourages us to keep going. Don’t play the short game, play the long game! As followers of Jesus, we are in a relationship with people for the long game…the very long game. Let’s not forget that or grow weary of doing good. Not only are we being formed, but often God is using us to form others as well.
