This is a sensitive, debated, and often very personal issue for many if not all of us. However, I don't believe that means we should not seek to think deeply about it. On the contrary, because of how personal and prevalent the issues of sex and gender are, I think it is something we must think deeply on. But as a Christian, I think that begins with understanding it theologically.
It seems like the vice of the day is entitlement. Other call it consumerism, but the underlying attitude and correlating actions are anything but pleasant. And that's the problem. Entitlement isn't just unpleasant for those around selfish people, it's actually unpleasant for the entitled person themselves. The entitled person cannot experience two critical things in life:
There was not an event in my life I could remember where he was not present. So my fathers perceived absence from my game was troubling. It really was his presence I craved and desired, regardless of how close or far away he was. This was especially true for my sports games.
Many people believe a government take over is the biggest threat to the church today. The belief that outside influences will disrupt, hinder, or ruin the church is routinely portrayed as the greatest danger facing the church.
And while we recognize the importance of each of these skills to developing our kids into fully functioning mature adults, there are other areas we want our kids to grow in. One of these major areas is discernment.
Remember. It's what this weekend is all about. Remembering people like my grandpa and uncles who gave their time, energy and risked their lives to establish and preserve some of the freedoms we enjoy today. But Memorial Day points us to a greater reality to remember.
