It’s a non-stop feed of photo’s, ideas, thoughts, and opinions. Social media can be a great place to interact and stay in touch with people. It can also be a pit of wasted time, energy, and focus. Yet one thing I have noticed about most social media platforms…they are dominated by self-promotion.

Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty of good idea sharing, life interactions, and informative stuff there. But so much of what fills my feed (whether on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter) is all about promotion of self. It seems like forever ago, but in 2012 the word “selfie” would not even have been in the dictionary.

“Culture has shifted so much that we now have a generation defined by the word ‘selfie’!”

While it might be easy to pick on the younger people for this trend, it shows up across age demographics. It’s a problem not just with teenagers and young adults – young families, middle aged, and even grandparents show this one trait. An obsession with self. Carey Nieuwhof writes an excellent article addressing “The Curse of the Selfie Generation“.

He makes three great points and to be honest point #2 concerns me the most. I have seen that play out in so many of my relationships and interactions over the past decade it’s quite frightening. I hope you enjoy the article and I’d love to hear your feedback and thoughts. As always be with the Lord’s people on the Lord’s day!
