The beginning of a new year is a time of rethinking. A time when many of us sit down and dream again. We look out the window, stare up at the sky, watch the clouds go by, and ponder. It just happens more this time of year. I’m not exactly sure why, since practically speaking there is nothing different about January 1st and December 31st. Nonetheless, more dreaming happens this time of year.
Anytime we dream, our minds open to new possibilities. New adventures that could be had. New habits to start. New methods of operation. This is true for individuals, families, and organizations. Dreams open up potential. We begin to look at things differently and see new angles. Dreaming brings a posture of learning alongside it. And if there is one thing the church in America could use right now it’s an attitude of learning.
“Immigrant churches might be holding the key to the future in America.“
Tim Keller
What a novel idea…churches around the world learning from one another instead of posturing against one another. I really appreciate how Steve Bang Lee heard Tim Keller’s words and reflected on them more deeply, resulting in his article “What the American Church Can Learn from the Immigrant Church“. It is insightful, reflective, and nuanced. And it’s so worth your time to read.
What if we, instead of thinking we had it all figured out, took a posture of learning and reflecting on what other churches are doing that we could benefit from? What if we sought to not do what’s always been done, but seek the same mission with various methods this year? As always I’d love to hear from my readers – what did you find most intriguing in Steve’s article? And don’t forget to be with the Lord’s people on the Lord’s Day.
Until Next Time…
