It was a rainy dreary day. Gray clouds rolled across the sky with the demeanor of a sulking toddler. People were shuffling into the courthouse for the verdict day. After 7 long days of hearing arguments, evidence presented, and cross-examinations, the day of judgment had come. The defendant would soon find out his fate. Media was swarming everywhere. Like buzzards on a corpse, cameramen and reporters filled every spare square inch of the courtroom. Judgment was coming. And the verdict was…

We love to hear verdicts, don’t we? There is something innate in us that we want to have judgments given. A deep desire to know the true, good, and beautiful resides in each of us. Even in our modern times, there is an inclination to make judgments of others – even if only internally. One could say judging comes naturally. We make judgments every day. But is making judgment calls all bad? Should we really never judge?

How do I want people to judge me?

Kevin DeYoung

The common response, to any disapproving nod or statement, is “Don’t judge me”. The best part about this statement is it’s rooted in something Jesus said, “Judge not”…(Matthew 7:1). So are we really not supposed to judge anything or anyone ever? Kevin DeYoung addresses this reality in his article “Judge Not“. DeYoung discusses how this command is so often misused and why it is needed.

I appreciate how Kevin first addresses the misuses of this command (which seem to be prevalent). However, I needed to hear just as much why the command is still necessary. His final point of why this command of Jesus is needed today really blessed me. What about you? Where did you find yourself agreeing? Disagreeing? Why? As always, I’d love to hear from my readers, and don’t forget to be with the Lord’s people on the Lord’s day.

Until Next Time…
